Plant nutrition is something not to be ignored. Even if you crave meat like a true carnivore, it's imperative to your health - and to Mother Earth's health - that you understand just how powerful plants can be.
It's easy to forget where our food comes from. We go to the grocery store, or even support local farmer's markets, but it's in this busy modern world that many have lost sight of what we are here for. We are here to live. And we are here to live with animal life, marine life and plant life. We are one with nature, whether we want to admit it or not.
So how does someone who loves meat, doesn't enjoy the outdoors and never cooks even begin to understand the power of plant nutrition? It's simple - just try it. The best place to start is by either beginning to grow your own small microgreens (even indoors with products like our Grow Book) or begin consciously buying some green foods from the grocery store you've never tried (just for fun!)
Once you begin to feel the effects of plants in your diet and daily life, you may begin to study more about what's happening inside your body. Experiencing something for yourself is a always a sure fire way to spark inspiration. And there's plenty of new research out there for anyone that doubts the necessity of green plants in their daily diets.
From green tea in Japan to lavender fields of Provence, specific plants around the world have always been appreciated for their health benefits. However, now we have access to new research and an ever-growing body of scientific research. “It’s an exciting area of research because these nutrients have the potential to prevent or help treat a variety of health conditions,” says Dr. Michael R. Lyon, an adjunct professor in the food, nutrition and health program at the University of British Columbia and the director of the Canadian Centre for Functional Medicine.
Green tea, for example, is cultivated in Japan and made from unfermented leaves of an evergreen shrub (Camellia sinensis). It stocked full with antioxidants called polyphenols, and even though the tannins are bitter - these active tannins help protect DNA and may prevent and fight certain cancers, allergies, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Studies indicate this powerful plant nutrition can help with weight loss as well, simply by boosting the bodies fat-burning capabilities. When you alreday drink a few cups of fluid during the day, why not try a few cups of green tea? Pay attention to how this changes your daily mood and overall health, and begin to watch your body change for the better.
Another powerful plant we haven't mentioned is turmeric. This spice, found most often in South Asian foods, contains curcumin - a polyphenol that produces a yellow colour. And it's probably one of the most powerful (and natural) anti-inflammatory agents ever discovered. The spicy plant naturally blocks a protein that switches inflammation on and off in the body. It may also help fight a wide range of diseases, including type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
We could go on forever explaining all the different plants and how to unlock the magic of plant nutrition. These are just a few examples, but as you can see, there's so much that has been gifted by Mother Earth. We encourage everyone to start adding plant nutrition to their daily menus - and watch as their health and happiness grows!
